Chrysler Group LLC will enter the electric vehicle market with the Fiat 500 -- engineered in Auburn Hills and likely built in Mexico.
The 500EV will go on sale in North America in 2012 -- slightly behind some of its competitors.
While Chrysler said in November that it planned to introduce an electric vehicle in 2012, it had envisioned a commercial vehicle. A Fiat Doblo electric commercial van is still in the works -- but after the 500EV....More

2011 Fiat 500 Chicago Auto Show

2011 FIAT 500: As part of Chrysler Group’s recovery plans in the United States, the 2011 Fiat 500 will be sold by its dealers later this year. The subcompact will be the first of several Fiat products to be sold here. The new 500 will be modified for this market, built in Mexico with 1.4 liter 4-cylinder engines built in Michigan.
The original 500, popular in Europe after World War II, was a rear engine car. This time around the 500 gets front engine and can, more or less, be compared to the Mini in configuration and size. Shown at the Chicago Auto Show will be a two-door hatchback.
Future plans may expand the range to include a convertible and other models possible. Early offerings are expected to have a 97-hp output and a 6-speed manual transmission. As we near introduction time, specs will be finalized.

,Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was quoted as saying his company plans to sell over 50,000 electric vehicles per year by 2014.
The 500 is already a popular subcompact car in Europe, and a gas version is expected to go on sale in the US next year.
Fiat 500 to test Chrysler
Chrysler Canada Inc. plans to begin selling the Fiat 500 subcompact in early 2011, providing an early test of how the alliance between the two auto makers will address the most glaring problem at the No. 3 Detroit company: the collapse in sales of its passenger cars.
The Fiat 500 is crucial for Chrysler Canada because of the particularly deep slide in passenger car sales that has afflicted all three of the Detroit auto makers here. As of the end of July, Chrysler, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors of Canada Ltd. delivered just 25 per cent of the passenger cars sold in Canada, a staggering drop from the 50-per-cent market share they held in 2000.
